The relaxing feeling in a Sunday market
By Nathalie Dianne Esteban
A relaxing atmosphere in an open area accompanied by the beat of native drums, a variety of scrumptious food and a wide range of unique creations and manufactures from different parts of the world, Legazpi Sunday Market doesn’t only serve as a place to relax and bond with the family and friends; it also promotes Filipino culture and tourism.
With 117 stalls at present, Legazpi Sunday Market stands in Herrera St., corner Legazpi Street in Makati City. It offers products from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
Barangay Captain Jay Santiago initiated the opening of the Legazpi Sunday Market about seven years ago to cater to his constituents in Legazpi, Barangay SanLo and commercial areas in Ayala
What began with only 45 stalls is now booming with over a hundred stalls and is presently handled by the Friends of Barangay SanLo, a non-government organization (NGO).
Expect that each stall is unique from the other stalls in terms of product offered. The organizers make it a point that there should be no duplication of items, with a certain purpose to protect the sellers. Every time a person endorses their product they tell them to go and look around the market to see if their item is already being offered.
The products in Legazpi Sunday Market range varies, from Moroccan cuisine to Parisian jams. You can also find ice cream made from carabao’s milk, pure vegetarian products, children-made t-shirts, and lucky charms.
There are tons of other stalls that the Legazpi Sunday Market offers. You might just be surprised at what else you discover.
More than just business
“Hindi ito negosyo, it is more of getting money and donating”, says the current president of Friends of Barangay SanLo, Ching Mendoza Joves, former president of the dental alumni association of the University of the Philippines. What they earn they donate various charity projects, to senior citizens and the like.
Legazpi Sunday Market does more than what a market usually does. It is more than the trade of items for money or vice versa, but the market serves as an place to unwind from all the hassle of everyday life and to meet new people. “I always go around because I want them to feel that they are part of the market”, says Ching. “Nag-eenjoy ako dito kasi I like meeting new people.”
The atmosphere of camaraderie, the friendly attitude of vendors, and the variety of products are the reasons why the patrons keep coming back to the market.
If you had a stressful week, take a break, invite your family or your friends, and try something different in Legazpi Sunday Market.
