President Noynoy Aquino led the opening of the Araneta Underpass on September 28, declaring the government saved P82 million in the project.
In the inauguration, the president praised the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for P452-million.
Aquino also praised the underpass’s early completion, three months ahead of schedule after starting construction only June 20 last year.
“Public money was spent well,” he said in a brief speech.
DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., and Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista also attended the inauguration.
“We were able to deliver our commitment to finish this milestone project of the President Benigno S. Aquino III administration much earlier despite bad weather and unforeseen construction challenges,” Singson said.
He said that the underpass would benefit the 100,000 motorists everyday.
The 440-meter underpass built along the intersection of Quezon Avenue and C-3 (G. Araneta Avenue) included the installation of three submersible pumps, the provision of water cisterns, and the construction of reinforced concrete boxes and pipe culverts to accommodate flooding.
