Footbridges in the Metro will soon have roofs, gates, and especially closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
This came after the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) approved private firms to improve the green and blue colored footbridges in the National Capital Region as part of the government’s public-private partnership program.
According to MMDA Public Concerns and Responses Management Unit head Goddes Hope Oliveros, the private firms who proposed the privatization of footbridges said that they will provide the necessary equipments in order to ensure greater security for pedestrians.
“As per the private firms who suggested the privatization of footbridges, they will deploy security guards and install CCTV cameras in footbridges in Metro Manila,” Oliveros said, with the target of installing the cameras December this year.
The project’s first proponents are the footbridges in populated areas like Quiapo and Baclaran.t
MMDA agreed with the proposal of the private firms with the goal of reducing cases of robbery in footbridges in the region.
Aside from the CCTV cameras and security guards, the private firms also suggested other development plans for the footbridges.
“The private firms also plan to put roofs and gates, as well as portable toilets and lights in the footbridges,” Oliveros added.
When asked about the private firms, Oliveros said that MMDA is not yet to divulge information about them, but they will be given credit as soon as the project starts.
Oliveros said that they are planning to start the project on November, starting with eight footbridges.
“We will start with eight footbridges along EDSA. I really hope that the pedestrians will feel the development aimed by this project,” said Oliveros.
