Ateneo Blue Eagles nail historic five-peat triumph

The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles grabbed their fifth consecutive championship title at the men’s basketball of UAAP Season 75, at the expense of the title-hungry UST Growling Tigers.
The Growling Tigers lost the championship title to the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles with a final score of 65-62 in the Game 2 of the best-of-three series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Thursday, October 11.
Just like in Game 1, the Tigers took the lead in the first quarter of the game at 14-13, with Kim Lo leading the scoreboard.
But the Katipunan-based squad bounced back in the second quarter, where they draw a tie with UST at 29-29, and took the lead in the third quarter at 47-46.
The Eagles established an eight-point lead at 59-51 in the final quarter which was majorly done by Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter who successfully collected point via free throws and two-pointers.
Meanwhile, UST’s Co-captains Jeric Fortuna and Jeric Teng pulled-off a floater and a putback respectively, bringing the Tigers at 60-58, Ateneo with only a two-point lead in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.
But the Eagles maintained their might at the court with Tiongson scoring a two-point shot, and Ravena pulling off a three-pointer.
Fortuna tried to catch up again by obtaining another three-point shot, but the clock ran out for the final quarter, ending the game and the season with a 5-peat championship for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
The Ateneo sweeped the first two games of the best-of-three championship series in which Game 1 ended with a win for the Eagles at 83-78, last Saturday, October 6, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Graduating Blue Eagle, Nico Salva was named as this season’s most valuable player, making him a back-to-back MVP for his performance in UAAP’s season 74 and 75.
